Dental >> Bone Grafting In Dentistry

Is Bone grafting used in Dentistry?
Yes, with advancement in dental treatments bone grafting is most commonly used in dentistry.
In which dental treatments bone grafting is used?
Bone grafting is used in following dental treatments
• Ridge preservation after tooth extraction
• Ridge augmentation
• Ridge repair
What are the different types of bone grafts?
Autograft: Are those where the bone to be grafted to the jaw is taken, or harvested, from your own body. The area where the bone is harvested from, known as the donor site, is usually the mouth or the hip. This is your own bone and is very compatible with your body. Autografts are generally the best graft technique and usually result in the greatest regeneration of missing jawbone.
Allograft: These grafts are  taken from human donors. Many countries have donor programs where you can specify that in the event of your death, parts may be harvested from your body to save or improve the life of others. Heart transplants are one type of allograft. This can represent one of the greatest "gifts" you can ever give. Bone obtained in this mannor undergoes rigorous tests and sterilization. Your body "converts" the donor bone into your natural bone, thereby rebuilding your resorbed jawbone.
Xenograft: These grafts are  harvested from animals. The animal bone, most commonly bovine (cow), is specially processed to make it biocompatible and sterile. It acts like a "filler" which in time your body will replace with natural bone. After this replacement process is complete dental implants may be placed to support teeth.
Alloplast: These grafts are inert, man made synthetic materials. The modern artificial joint replacement procedure uses metal alloplastic grafts. For bone replacement a man made material that mimics natural bone is used. Most often this a form of calcium phosphate. Depending on how it is made, it may be "resorbable" or "non-resorbable". That is, your body may or may not replace the alloplastic graft with your natural bone. In those cases where it is not replaced it acts as a lattice or scaffold upon which natural bone is built. In either case, the end result is to create enough bone for the placement of dental implants.

Weighing about 3 to 3.5 kgs at birth. During the first year of life baby grows more rapidly called infancy. Each month the healthy baby gains 600 to 700 Gms that is during first 6 months. From 7 months to 1 year about 300 to 400 Gms weight gain is seen. After the first year the healthy child gains 150 to 200 Gms.
When growth slows or stops we say growth falters. This is a sign that something wrong with the child. We should regularly monitor the growth to see if child is growing properly or not.

If the child is growing and there is a regular weight gain the line will move in an upward direction. When growth falters the line in the graph grows in downward direction. And if weight doesn’t increase as per the expectations the line on the graph doesn’t grow upwards but stay flat.
Children grow rapidly birth to three years particularly the first year. In this age they are vulnerable to diseases and inadequate nutrition which effect normal growth pattern. It is essential to monitor in this age, all the children birth 3 years should be weighed every month. Children between 3 to 6 years once in 3 months.

    Glamour >> Stem Cell Facial

Stem Cell Skin facial Therapy uses cells taken from pregnant cows in the eighth month of pregnancy. The cells are drawn in such a way neither the cow nor the calf is harmed, and the cow's body replaces the drawn fluid in few hours. In lab the cells are purified and sterilized serum is stored in bottles. At a medical spa licensed clinicians, under the supervision of a medical expert treat facial skin with the stem cell mixture under sterile conditions. The workers are advised to use sterile gloves and masks to maintain aseptic condition and using a pipette it is transferred to the face. The liquid containing the stem cells is spread over the face until it is absorbed, and then a spray is applied often to keep the liquid in place until it can be absorbed into the upper layers of skin. Stem Cell Skin Therapy can be used in two ways: to firm or to hydrate. If a patient has deep creases, hydrating first so that the cells will better hold the stem cell solution for later tightening and firming. The effects of the treatment peak about six days following the application.

Diet » Health Articles » Importance of iron rich foods

Iron is needed for hemoglobin synthesis and body defense. Iron deficiency is common especially in women and in children. Deficiency of iron leads to anemia. Iron deficiency during pregnancy increases maternal mortality and low birth weight in infants. In children it increases susceptibility to infection. Iron bioavailability is poor from plant foods comparatively to animal foods.  Vitamin C rich fruits improve the iron absorption such as Alma, oranges, guava. Beverages like tea bind dietary iron and make it unavailable. Hence they should be avoided before, during and soon after a meal.
Some of the iron rich foods are green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, ragi, fish, meat and poultry.

Diet » Therapeutic Diets » High Fiber diet

A fiber diet contains foods that have a lot of fiber. High fiber diet has many health benefits. High fiber diet is recommended in the treatment of digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Eating high fiber foods helps in proper digestion also helps in absorption of nutrients. When you eat the diet rich in fiber the daily intake of water should be adequate as liquids help your body to digest fiber. Recommendations for adults are between 25 and 40 grams per day. Dietary fiber adds bulk to your diet.

    Health benefits of high fiber:
    • A diet rich in fiber controls Diabetes by maintaining the blood glucose levels. It actually slows down the digestion and it doesn’t raise the blood sugar levels too fast. It takes more time than it takes time when the food does not contain fiber. As the glucose is not released into blood too fast, pancreas doesn’t secrete insulin too fast and blood sugars are in control.
    • High fiber diet protects against colon cancer.
    • A diet rich in fiber lowers cholesterol levels. Fiber absorbs the water as it moves through digestive tract. And this increases the stool bulk, which causes the intestine to pass them more quickly. As the stool passes more quickly there is less chance for any harmful substances they contain to harm the cells lining the intestine. Fiber also helps as it traps cancer causing agents in colon.
    • It improves bowel regularity.
    • It increases satiety and controls appetite.
    • It also enhances immune system.
    • Prolonged contraction of the colon may result in diverticulitis. This increase in pressure cause small and larger ballooning pockets to form. Usually this doesn’t cause any problems. But sometimes they can become infected or also cause inflammation when the pockets are perforated. As the diet rich in fiber increases bulk in the stool and this reduces the pressure in the colon. And so the formation of pockets is stopped.
    • Fiber helps in treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. The increased amounts of fiber in diet produces soft and bulky stools. But IBS patients should be careful in selecting the amount and type of fiber. The reason is that the increased amount of soluble fiber may cause health benefit by growing the good bacteria, if too much of soluble fiber is consumed intestinal gas can occur.
    • High fiber diet lowers the risk of heart disease and controls the cholesterol levels and triglycerides.
    • High fiber diet is good weight management.

    Glamour >> Laser skin resurfacing

    Laser skin resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a new treatment for reducing facial wrinkles and skin irregularities including blemishes and acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin very precisely layer by layer, thus gradually minimizing the problems and resulting in the lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation).
Laser skin resurfacing is also known as lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization.
The laser resurfacing techniques involve the direction of short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin surfaces. The two types of laser most commonly used for this technique are carbon dioxide and erbium. These laser vaporize superficial damaged skin cells and reduce the risk for the patients as it limits the amount of heat absorbed by the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing treatment is recommended for the persons having fine lines or wrinkles around or under the eyes, forehead and mouth; scars from skin; a non-responsive skin after the facelift. This treatment is not recommended for active acnes, stretch mark or in case of candidates having very dark skin.
However the possible complications of laser skin resurfacing include:
    • Appearance of small, while bumps (Milia) in the laser treated areas during healing. These can be removed by gentle cleaning with the wash clothes.
    • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may result in the laser treated areas.
    • Reappearance of cold sore may occur. This is more common in laser skin resurfacing around the mouth.
    • The risk of bacterial infections also prevails.
    • Swelling of the treated area.
    • Scarring may also occur in the laser exposed areas.
Cessation of smoking is highly recommended because smoking is known to have harmful effects on the healing process.
However it is important to learn that skin treated with laser may react in different ways. Most common is chances of getting mild sunburn. Therefore daily sunscreen (broad spectrum with SPF greater than 15) application is necessary after healing to protect the newly resurfaced laser skin. Liberal moisturizer application is also recommended after healing.
